From Partition to the present, the historical evolution of the Siliguri Corridor, or the “Chicken’s Neck,” stands as a vivid symbol of India’s geopolitical instability. This narrow stretch of land (approximately 22 kilometers wide), created by the Radcliffe Line in 1947, connects mainland India with the eight northeastern states, but at the same time, its proximity to the borders of Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and China has turned it into a permanent chokepoint of national security. This study shows how the corridor has continuously evolved—from the initial geopolitical restructuring after Partition to the conflicts of 1962 and 1971, the regional diplomacy after the 1990s, and the contemporary climate and security challenges. In my view, the Chicken’s Neck is not merely a passage of connectivity but a complex testing ground for India’s territorial integrity, defense strategy, and regional stability. China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the Doklam crisis, political changes in Bangladesh, climate-induced disasters, and internal instability in the northeastern region have transformed the corridor’s narrowness into a multidimensional threat. Ghising (2024) rightly notes that post-Partition migration and border adjustments laid the foundation for the corridor’s persistent vulnerability. Noor (2026) further argues that its narrowness, historical formation, and increasing geopolitical pressures have made it highly fragile. This study seeks to demonstrate that the instability of the Chicken’s Neck is not only historical but also a multifaceted challenge of the present and future. Despite India’s Act East Policy, BBIN cooperation, and infrastructural development, the resilience of the corridor remains crucial for national security and regional diplomacy. This analysis aims to offer new perspectives for India’s defense policy and regional strategy.
Abstract in Bengali Language:
